OSU Classic
A short recap of the OSU Classic.
The novice 4 broke their skeg on something and weren't able to race against two Seattle Pacific boats. They left with the skeg, but it broke off somewhere in the warmup area. This was disappointing, but it's not the first time something like this has happened at Dexter Lake. A few years ago I had an eight on the water, and they lost their skeg as well out in the middle of the lake. Most likely what happened was we hit a rock leaving the launch area that we couldn't see, and the pressure of the boat moving through the water finished it off. It certainly wasn't ideal, but it's no ones fault.
The varsity 8 raced well against Oklahoma, Seattle Pacific and Oregon State. They beat Seattle Pacific, but and were with Oklahoma and OSU for the first 750, but didn't execute well in the third 500 and the two D1 programs powered away. It's been a bit of a bugaboo with the varsity 8 this year, and last year where they have an issue shifting into the 3rd 500.
The varsity 4 raced extremely well in tough conditions in the afternoon, finishing second to Oklahoma, but with open water over Central Florida, Oregon State, and Seattle Pacific. It was a very gutsy race for the four, and a good way to end a tough week. Earlier in the week we lost an athlete to a broken hand, and the top novice athlete wasn't able to sub in. Still an excellent race for the boat and something to build upon.
