Covered Bridge
We attended the Covered Bridge regatta this weekend here at Dexter Lake. Covered Bridge used to be a collegiate/junior regatta that spanned two days, but the events had become so popular, and the venue so impressive that they made the correct decision to split the collegiate programs into their own regatta and allow both to grow.
Yesterday we faced teams from:
Seattle U
U. of Portland
Portland State
Chico State
Santa Clara
Humboldt State
Western Washington
Saint Marys
Reed College
Oregon State - Men only
Seattle Pacific
Arizona State
Sonoma State
It was a successful regatta for both the men's and the women's programs with several boats coming home with medals.
The women's novice four:
This is the priority boat for the novice women this season. They kicked off the morning with the first heat and easily advanced to the finals. In the finals they came up just short of Western Washington, but easily defeated two Division One programs, including one they've had a budding rivalry with. I was pleased with their result, and was happy that finishing second to Western, an excellent program, keeps their fires lit.
The women's varsity four:
This is the priority boat for the varsity women this season. They also had a relatively straightforward heat, finishing 3rd and advancing to the final. In a close final the four finished 2nd to Western, upsetting two Division One programs. It was the first defeat for the V4, but they feel confident going forward, and I believe the loss will only help them.
The women's novice eight:
This was the first of two flights with medals being awarded for the highest placement. They finished 3rd in both the first and second flight earning bronze for the regatta. It was a solid, gutsy performance for the boat that's been hit by injuries.
The women's jayvee four:
This was a throw together boat that came together this last week. It's been the boat with the most controversy, but they pulled together to finish 2nd in their heat, and then second in the finals just behind the University of Portland.
Again, overall it was an excellent showing for the University of Oregon, and with three weeks left till WIRAs, and 7 total till ACRAs, we seem to be on the right track.
