Winter doldrums
We continue to push on with winter training but attrition has had a definite impact on the team and the number of novice showing up on a regular basis is dwindling. Varsity hasn't been immune either and overall the number that we originally started out with seems like a happy dream.
One of the biggest problems is our location which is not convenient to get to, very cold despite propane heaters and cramped making it difficult to accommodate everyone which made us split practices. I believe this has really impacted the team because varsity are with varsity, novice with novice and the team seems to be fractured. We are hoping that a new building - in the works now - will eliminate this hassle and we will be able to go back to what we had last year where everyone worked out together.
The positive side of this is that those who have been coming, varsity and novice, have maintained very solid attitudes and have attacked the practices with vigor that I wish we could bottle up and spread to the rest of the team. The novice seem unsure about the work but the varsity have really bought into the workout program and I believe that the results from the fall as well as the charted progression really has them seeing the gains they've made. Last year they took some serious lumps and I think they're hoping that this season they can be avoiding the same results. Another positive is that we've managed to avoid any major illness break out and the injury bug. The athletes are taking better care of themselves this year.
We are quickly closing in on the mid point of winter. We shut down official practices in a few weeks for the Christmas break and resume in early January with optional workouts during the mid afternoons. This year seems to be picking up speed as we move toward spring.
