New Facility
Thanks to one very hard working mother and daughter, the team got an early Christmas present: a new winter practice facility.
This has been in the works for a while now and it seemed like nothing but rumors and speculation but then Tuesday we got the call that the facility was ours and was ready for move in. So Wednesday we used my truck, a parents construction truck and several other large vehicles and packed up all the weight lifting equipment and ergs and moved into our new place.
I hope to have pictures by tomorrow once we've got everything in place. Right now it's still a bit of a mess. It used to be an old office building that looks to have been gutted and revamped with dark wood cabinetry and new paint and tile. It's a very spacious area with several smaller offices off a main floor that's been divided into 8 large cubicles. Since the space isn't quite what your typical workout room would look like we had to get clever. I'll walk you through the facility.
* Enter the building through two sets of double doors.
* Upon entry the large secretary/receptionist area has been turned into the coaches/paperwork area.
* On the left are the ergs with 5 inside a glass meeting room complete with two low slung chandeliers.
* Down the hall on the right you enter the main floor that's been divided by 8 cubicles and 7 small offices plus an old copy room.
* Five cubicles now house our leg press machines. The last three house the box jump and free weight area.
* 4 of the smaller offices are now home to our bench pull machines.
* 1 office is dedicated to equipment storage
* 1 office is another free weights area
* 1 office houses part of our mats for stretching and cal/ab workouts
* The old supply closet complete with 7 large shelving units has now become the athlete locker room. No more piles of stuff on the floor.
* We haven't found a use for the break room but the kids love having running water to refill empty water bottles.
* The copy room hasn't yet found a use either.
* The large back room sharing a wall with the erg room is now the step room with free weights. This is also a changing room.
* The last remaining large office has become the film room.
And the part that the kids love the most: 2 bathrooms. The kids love this. No more freezing cold portapotty. And with the building having both heating and cooling we can say goodbye to hauling propane heaters around.
Today was our first day in the new facility and again while everything hasn't quite found a home yet, we got in a great workout. It was a little surreal to be standing in the hall surveying the kids working out in their own cubicles and offices but everyone loves the new place and the kids seem to have a spring in their step. As a coach I'm extremely happy with this new setup. Before we lost 30 minutes to travel time because we couldn't park anywhere near the old place. Now we can dedicate a full 2 hours to practice not an hour and a half - makes a huge difference. Of course the varsity guys were moaning a bit since they now have the ability to do all three 20 minute pieces but I think it was more for show because they attacked each piece.
We're not sure if this is going to be a semi-permanent relocation or if it's just for the winter but I know we're very happy to have it. I'll try and remember to get some pictures tomorrow before and during practice.
