"Winning" a race no one cares about

Yesterday I watched as American Pharoah won the Triple Crown.  It was an exciting race from start to finish, and for a few moments I wondered if 37 years of history was about the repeat itself as the horse looked to tire in the final turn before pulling away to win easily.

In the discourse that followed, along with the usual written opinion articles, there was talk about this horse being the, "best ever."

I don't know when this, "best ever," craze started, but I sure as hell want it to go away.

Let's put this to bed right now.  There never was, there never will be the best ever in life, in sports, in anything.  Ever.

We seem to be in a rush to proclaim people or events as the, "best ever," before either have accomplished much, or based on a single happening.  We're equally as quick to write them off when life inevitably gets in the way.

We will never know who or what is the best ever.  Times change.  The games and eras change.  What is taken as "law" now, will be a pleasant memory 50 to 100 years from now, just as it was 50 to 100 years prior.

Let's cut out this needless competition for, "the best ever."  Let's drop the argument you will never be able to win even when backed by statistics because what is now, and what was then are as different as night and day.

Let's be satisfied saying, "That was incredible."  Let's be satisfied in saying, "That was amazing," or "Where were you when...."
