Getting into it
We had our first official practice of the fall season today. We've split the men and women up to help accommodate the number of athletes we have with the teams alternating between morning and afternoons.
This morning it was the women on the block first. We ran them through a series of erg pieces and then some basic land training. Right now we're just figuring out what we have in numbers and in fitness. They did fairly well with some clearly ahead of others which was to be expected. Overall the technique was rather average but it'll improve as we really get into it. The fall is very short so we're trying to get a lot done in a finite amount of time before we transition over to winter individual practices.
The men's team came down this afternoon to run roughly the same workout. Unfortunately the men's team is a lot smaller and we have several athletes who will be taking fall off and we have a couple going abroad in the spring. We've managed to pick up a couple here and there but could use a few more. Overall the guys did fairly well with two being right on track for fall and everyone else falling in line somewhere in there. Technique is the major issue with them right now and with so little experience currently on the team we're got a lot of work ahead of us.
In all I think we'll be ok. There is some grumbling coming from the women's side about practice and such so hopefully we'll get this sorted out soon. The guys are continuing to recruit which hopefully will land us 8 to 10 more guys to help us survive the fall and winter drops.
Thus far despite the low numbers I'm loving being back at the collegiate level. I know that Division III is a very difficult level to work out due to the focused balance of academics and athletics - I think this level had it right compared to the others - but it's also very rewarding and it's fun being able to spend more time working on rowing rather than the hit and miss that can happen with high school.
