A moment of silence
Horrendous news out of Oklahoma today. The head and assistant women's basketball coaches for Oklahoma State University along with others, were killed in a small plane crash. It's especially terrible given that this university has suffered through a previous plane crash about 10 years ago.
I feel like coaching is such a self selected fraternity where regardless of what sport you coach or what level you're at, you are one of the few who has chosen to walk a difficult path. Most coaches I know aren't coaching for the money or for the wins or fame but for their athletes. They choose to do what they do, put in the hours they do because they love it and they love their kids. They are trying to make a real difference in the lives of their athletes and teach them to be more than simply a rower, a soccer player, a basketball player but to use their love of sport and competition to become complete individuals. I really believe - and love - that statement that the NCAA puts out in their ads:
There are more than 380,000 NCAA student-athletes and most of us will go pro in something other than sports.
The tragedy in Oklahoma cannot be overstated. The loss is palpable and it's hard to find or even search for the silver lining in the face of such a loss. We are with you. Though we may not bleed orange, we all hurt for you.
