This weekend kicked off the competitive fall season for our juniors program.
Saturday
Saturday we participated in a small boats regatta in North Portland called "Head of the Dog." I'm not sure why it's called that but the bow numbers were cut in the shape of a dogs head. This was a varsity only race with the novice attending to get an idea of how a regatta - fall regatta - was run with loading and unloading boats as well as rigging and regatta timing. Overall a pretty good performance albeit against mostly masters crews. There were a couple other junior crews around but the level of competition was rather low.
Sunday
Sunday was "Row for the Cure" which is - obviously - the rowing version of "Race of the Cure." This was a much bigger regatta and we allowed the novice to participate this year. Last year this was the race that novice went to for observation. Again overall we did rather well and against much tougher competition. I think just about everyone brought home medals though the novice men's result was slightly confusing. They cut a buoy which meant a time penalty but were later disqualified - reasons unknown. The important part of this weekend wasn't about earning a medal but about learning how a regatta works, how to behave and what's expected. Medals were simply icing on the cake if earned. The novice men learned a valuable lesson about paying attention at the coaches/coxswains meeting - this is where I think the medal was lost - which hopefully they can use at a future race.
