New office
August is rapidly coming to a close - finally - and it's easy to see that campus is coming back to life. The fall sports teams are working out and in training right now, more and more event tents and such are popping up and there are signs everywhere for the incoming freshmen. My e-mail has also been blowing up with greater frequency along with my cell phone and we're getting ready to do some of the last remaining items on our summer list such as picking up our shells and getting the launches serviced.
Yesterday we moved from our old rowing office to the new office. The new office is about 1.5 times bigger than the old office and though we will end up sharing it with one other coach, the bigger space means we have more elbow room. An additional plus is that there's enough room that I'm going to get a desk meaning I won't be relegated to spreading across the front of the main desk and when we get recruits, we won't be scrambling to clear space.
The new office is an interior office with a large window that looks down into the main lobby of the Sparks Center. While it's not the outside view we had in the old office, I think the tradeoff is that we don't have the sun baking the office for 5 or 6 hours a day. Even in the winter that office would get uncomfortably warm and when the heat would kick in on top of being up since 4 am, it was very easy to start falling asleep.
There are two unique features of this office. The first is that it used to be a very large room connected to two other offices before they closed them off. Because of this, the main light switch is located outside our office door. This isn't a big deal because neither Ryan or I like the overhead lights - makes the room nearly white when in use - but it is odd. The second is that we have this 2 foot brick wall that will divide my desk and his. It will be less noticeable when my desk gets in next week. I guess one final thing - thus making three unique features - is that we have a lot of storage cabinets which are both a positive and negative. The positive is that we have a ton of storage space which is good considering all the odds and ends that we tend to accumulate. The negative is that we have a lot of really awesome picture frames that now do not have a space to live. We're thinking about expanding across the hallway and using the far wall as ours but for now there are a lot of pictures and posters that are just sitting with no where to go. The one wall with the giant space in it will be for our new whiteboard though we are contemplating using the window as well.
In addition to the new office we have brand new keys and a huge bonus this year is that I get office keys and keys to the front door of the office. No more waiting around outside hoping for someone to let me in for this boy or borrowing the secretary's keys to get into my office. The downside, if you can call it that, is that my key ring is too small for the keys so I'll need to upgrade.
While I'd like to say that the mess in the bookshelves is due to the move, it's not. That's pretty much how we've had those since last year. We don't use them all that much except as a side table so the shelves are crammed full of random books, magazines and spare clothing.
